The Golden Baobab extended the deadline for the 2018 call for submissions. The new deadline is March 31, 2018.
The call out was first announced on March 31, 2017 and the deadline set at December, 2017. However, the organisers of the prestigious prize for children literature based in Accra, Ghana, extended the deadline to give opportunity to more writers and illustrators to submit their work.
The submissions are divided into three categories:
- The Golden Baobab Prize for Picture Books, for the best story targeting a reader audience of ages 4-8.
- The Golden Baobab Prize for Early Chapter Books for the best story targeting a reader audience of ages 9-11.
- The Golden Baobab Prize for Illustrators for the best artwork that matches illustration briefs provided, intended for children ages 4-11.
Starting this year, the Golden Baobab will focus on granting winners publishing opportunities apart from the cash prizes. In the past, the organization only gave cash prizes to the overall winners.
In the words of the organisers,
“The 2018 Golden Baobab Prize offers a distinct platform for professional African writers and illustrators to kick-start their careers. The Prize will work to facilitate relationships between African publishers and finalist writers and illustrators with the goal to see more African children’s books being published.”
The prize is open to writers from all African countries who are required to submit stories written in English. On the table is a cash prize of USD 5000, a publishing deal, and opportunities in writer and illustrator workshops. Winners will be announced in September, 2018.
